Most of our favorite BBQ places are in the heart of the city, but we came here because we live near the area and wanted BBQ without having to drive far. This is really one of the few sit down BBQ places in KCK west of the Gates at 10th and State that I can think of (Legends AB's doesn't count IMO). Walking in, the restaurant reminded me of a VFW hall, a big open dining room with loose tables and chairs, no booths, and a small bar near the kitchen. Found it kind of weird that it was dead silent aside from conversation, no background music or anything despite the jukebox in the corner, but oh well. The food itself, while nothing really mind-blowing, was still very good. I ordered a rib combo dinner with three ribs, a half lb of beef and ham, fries, and a side of potato salad (could have had beans or slaw). My wife ordered the turkey dinner and we got our one year old a grilled cheese that came with chips as he is not really into meat. All the food was very good and the meat was very well cooked. The ribs were excellent, lots of meat on them and not overcooked to where it falls off the bone with one bite. The sliced beef, ham, and turkey were all tender and juicy. They had one "regular" sauce and it was pretty good too, thick, smoky, tangy, and a little sweet but well balanced and not over the top. The value was pretty good as well, right around $30 before the tip for a family of 3. Service was OK; there was only one waitress and I think we were the only people in there out of 4 tables that the staff didn't know personally so they kept her tied up, but we are pretty low maintenance diners anyways. Overall, we would eat here again in a pinch, but it probably won't replace any of our midtown favorites.

Coleslaw is very tangy and vinegar based, we were warned, but I like it. Definitely something in which one would either like it or really hate it. The potato salad was not bad either. Onion rings were a little overcooked and crunchy. On with the meat! Jayhawker! Pretty good sandwich, beef & turkey combo version Sausage, pretty good as well Baby back ribs, did not fall off the bone and melt in my mouth, not too good

In a town of great bbq I'm a tough critic. I met a group of college friends here and it was fine but come on! It's KC. "fine' bbq just doesn't cut it. The sauce is yummy - a little spicy, nice and thick. The onion rings were good, but a little greasy. The pork was quite fatty for my liking. There are so many better places to have bbq in kc, I don't know how places like this stay open. Plus I really question a bbq restaurant where you hang out for over 2 hours and leave NOT smelling like smoky goodness.

I had always been loyal to The Hickory Log, as I'd been a patron there since I was a regular user of their little red booster seats. R&J's recipes are very similar - I actually think the only difference is a slightly thicker sauce at R&J (I have heard that each restaurant was founded by the same family). They lean toward the tangy, with vinegar slaw and garlic toast as my favorite sides to the beef dinner. The portions are good and the service quick and friendly. The only improvement I could see is maybe a little live music - it's a big enough joint to support it!

The food is good! The cole slaw is outstanding! The selection of meat is beef, ham, turkey, ribs & burnt ends. They also have chicken fingers and burgers. Several side dishes round out the menu.

Great food at a great price. Can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches and the ribs are great and tender. If you are near the Legends this is worth the 5 minute detour for a great meal.

A lot of food for the price. Older local restaurant.
